Cafe Zapata @ Kunsthaus Tacheles

The Kunsthaus Tacheles (Art House Tacheles) was an art center in Berlin, Germany, a large (9,000 m2) building and sculpture park on Oranienburger Straße in the district known as Mitte.
Huge, colorful graffiti-style murals were painted on the exterior walls, and modern art sculptures were featured inside. The building housed an artists collective from 1990 until 2012.

The building in which the art center was located, was a former department store called Friedrichstraßenpassage. It was built in 1907-1908. After the opening the builing had many different functions over the years. But it had not once been renovated, despite relatively continuous and intensive use.

The building would have been demolished between 1980 and 1990. But an art collective occupied the building and got it named a historic landmark. It became an art center with a cafe, cinema, performance space, workshops and exhibition space.

The building was in use by the art collective untill 2011, when the lease contract had expired and the building was sold.

According to a little bit of information found on Rammwiki.org and Setlist.fm Rammstein has played a show at the Cafe Zapata which is located within this art center on 02-07-1994.
Cafe Zapata was a Underground club located in the basement of the Kunsthaus mainbuilding from 1990 till 2011.

EDIT 2 (20-07-2020):

Construction work has been going on for a while now on the former arthouse building. It will be converted in luxery apartments, offcie space and a shopping mall.

In Berlin the general public does not need this unneeded space, but sadly they can’t stop progress.
