Schorfheide & Bernau (Landkreis Barnim)

The Schorfheide (also Great Heath) is a predominantly closed forest area in the north of the state of Brandenburg. It extends over parts of the districts of Barnim, Oberhavel and Uckermark.

The Schorfheide area is not exactly defined. The understanding of which areas belong to the Schorfheide has changed over time. Originally, probably only a narrow wet meadow area west of the Werbellinsee was called Schorfheide. It extended roughly from Wildau to the level of the later Hubertusstock hunting lodge. From the middle of the 19th century this area was referred to as “Engere Schorfheide”.

Bernau is a German town in the Barnim district. The town is located about 10 km northeast of Berlin.
The city was first mentioned in 1232. The true reasons of its founding are not known. According to a legend Albert I of Brandenburg permitted the founding of the city in 1140 because of the good beer which was offered to him. It is true that beer has been brewed with the water of the river Panke. Therefore, it was forbidden by law to pollute this river with waste and excrement before the days the brewing took place.
